Mr Simmons

Joined Arthur Terry in July 2010 as an NQT after training at University of Birmingham (PGCE) at which time he completed placements at College High School (currently North Birmingham Academy) and John Willmott School. During his time at Arthur Terry he has been on many school trips including the Duke of Edinburgh trips, overseas visits with other departments to Poland, Madrid and the upcoming South Africa trip in 2013. Within Geography, he has accompanied trips to Dorset, Stratford-upon- Avon, Ashes Hollow and an urban redevelopment project on Brindleyplace. Mr Simmons is currently the co-leader for the annual Outward Bound trips to Aberdovey and Ullswater whilst planning a Geography trip to Iceland in 2013.

In terms of extra curricular work, Mr Simmons co-coaches the school's Year 9 and 10 rugby team with Mr. Zarifeh and the boys last year won the Birmingham Emerging School's Rugby Competition and performed very bravely against other "traditional rugby" schools at a 7s tournament.

Within Geography, Mr Simmons has the responsibility for arranging the KS3 school trips and last year students learned about Globalisation, role of technologies and the geographical location of cocoa producing countries during their trip to Cadbury World. This year it looks as though students will have the chance to go to the Eden Project as part of their Ecosystem studies. Mr Simmons teaches all age groups from Year 7 up to Year 13 and specialises in Human topics of Population, Energy, Development & Globalisation and World Cities during sixth form. In particular Mr Simmons enjoys creating lessons that are contemporary and often require students to be creative in their approach to learning. He led a session at the Geographical Association Conference at the University of Manchester in 2012 on "Developing Creative Geographers" and why it is important to allow students the opportunity to express the knowledge they have without being restricted by set boundaries from text books.

Through his role as a BLP ambassador you may have also seen his "BLP Starter Activities" that get sent around to your subject teacher too.

Academically Mr Simmons completed his BSc. at Loughborough University and was awarded a 2.1 whilst specialising in human geography and contemporary ideas of space and place. Mr Simmons is currently working towards his MEd. at University of Birmingham this year and hopes to have made significant impacts at setting foundations that encourage learner independence amongst our students.

Mr Simmons was the Hereford Activities Co-ordinator for the Year 2011 - 2012 and has been appointed as the York B Progress leader starting September 2012.
