GCSE Geography at Arthur Terry


At Arthur Terry we have decided to choose the AQA GCSE B specification as we feel not only are the topics exciting and engaging but they are also topics that students should of, or will in the future be able to see how the knowledge they acquire fits into the modern world. Course structures and assessments


The course is assessed by the culmination of four units of work, therefore we offer a wide range of material over the three years at GCSE level so students have a choice of which question they wish to take. 
Unit 1: Managing Places in the 21st Century
- The Urban Environment

Unit 2: Hostile World
- The Challenge of extreme environments
- Living with Natural Hazards

Unit 3: Investigating the Shrinking World
Globalisation of Industry
- Investigating Global Tourism
Unit 1,2 and 3:
  • External exams, each lasting 1 hour
  • Each unit attracts 25% of the total mark
  • Each unit consists of two sections. Students must answer either Section A or Section B
Unit 4, Task 1: Local Investigation inc. Fieldwork (Controlled Assessment)
  • 15% of the total mark; marked out of 36
  • Word guidance: 1200 words
  • 4 hour write up under direct supervision (high control)
Unit 4, Task 2: Geographical Issue Investigation (Controlled Assessment)
  • 10% of the total mark; marked out of 24
  • 10% of the total mark; marked out of 24
  • 2 hour write-up under direct supervision (high control)
